Thomas Geddes
Artist’s Statement
Thomas Geddes has always felt close to the natural world, or at least has always wanted to feel close. This desire permeates throughout his practice. There is an underlying investigation into the relationships between humanity and the other-than-human world.
Thomas will often change mediums to better suit the work he is making. In recent years, alongside watercolour, he has delved into moving image, sculptural and installation projects.
His current work focusses on watercolour landscapes that often veer into dreaminess and abstraction. The material and animate nature of watercolour is fundamental to these paintings. The creation process is purposefully a little out of control, playing with the paints as they flow, bloom, and granulate. The spontaneity and effects of this lively quality are often surprisingly beautiful and interesting. This can create unusual moments in a painting where the sky and land blur and blend, or where figures seem to emerge from the earth or dissolve into the air.
After High School, Thomas spent a handful of summers working on vineyards and absorbing the Central Otago landscape. He has travelled a little and studied at Elam and Whitecliffe before graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He continues to visit family often and finds inspiration in these vast and mysterious landscapes.
Thomas was Eade Gallery's first Emerging Artist Solo Artist in 2021 and had the gallery's first sell-out exhibition.
