Steve Halton
Artist’s Statement
My boxes are primarily designed with aesthetic and sculptural emphasis while also maintaining a function as a container for precious possessions. Each piece is carefully created to highlight the natural colours and textures of the timber.
Biography
Steve designs and creates bespoke boxes and wall art from recycled and rescued woods which are mostly New Zealand grown and sourced locally. His boxes are designed with an aesthetic and sculptural emphasis while maintaining a function as a container for precious possessions. Each piece is carefully designed to highlight the natural beauty of selected woods without using any additional stains.
Originally from North Yorkshire, where he instructed craftwork, Steve moved with his family to New Zealand in 2009. He has always had an affinity with wood and over the years has fitted out the interior of an ocean-going yacht, produced pieces of furniture and created bespoke boxes from British and European timbers.
Steve regularly exhibits on the North and South Islands and his work sells to both home and overseas buyers.
