Elfi Spiewack
Artist’s Statement
“Elfi's design process is often stimulated by her observations of natural materials, shapes and phenomena, but she also finds inspiration in urban culture and likes to collaborate with artists in other media. Elfi constantly searches for new means of creative expression, challenging preconceived ideas of the style and meaning of jewellery objects: “I basically like to develop new ways of seeing, wearing and maybe even defining jewellery.”
Her European background shows in her aesthetics and designs but she says concepts are more and more influenced by her new home New Zealand.”
Biography
Born in Germany, Elfi gained work experience with jewellers in Montreal, Canada and Berlin, Germany, before starting her jewellery apprenticeship at the Goldsmith and Watchmaker School in Pforzheim, Germany. She gained her qualification as a certified goldsmith and then went on to gain her BA in Jewellery and Object Design in 1996.
In 1999 Elfi immigrated to New Zealand and established 'The Filing Kabinett', a jewellery workshop / studio co-op which is now in The Tannery Complex in Woolston.
Her work has been widely exhibited in group and solo shows throughout New Zealand, Germany, The Netherlands, USA and Australia since 1993. Her first Public Art Gallery solo show was in 2017 and toured New Zealand subsequently.
Besides part time teaching and curating she mostly enjoys developing challenging work for new exhibitions.
