Rachel Hirabayashi
Rachel Hirabayashi is the first of the season’s solo exhibitions at Eade Gallery. These exhibitions give our artists not only the ability to present a body of work but also an opportunity for our customers to meet the artist.

Born in Auckland in 1965, Rachel is a traveller by nature. She has lived in Japan and Mexico and travelled through the Americas, Europe and Asia. Rachel always returns home to Cromwell, Central Otago, where she lives in a 112-year old cottage with her dogs, surrounded by a large garden. From here she takes regular trips in “Fordita”, her campervan, where Rachel gathers a headful of images that influence her daily making and painting.
With a degree in Art History/Theory from the University of Otago, Rachel is a full-time artist painting in acrylics and making sculptures out of metal.
The surfaces of her paintings are built up over time with light glazes of colour and opaque layers of paint.
In the tabletop sculptures, Hirabayashi provides the same quiet stillness that is synonymous with her paintings. Made from steel, these braised “intrigues” are meant to gain a patina. The thin coating colouring their surface is a way to evoke the weathered terrain of Hirabayashi’s home landscape in Central Otago.

Rachel is part of a major Avis campaign across Australasia called the Art of Discovery. Check her youtube video
